1. Is it really necessary to use sunscreen all year round?
A. In J-beauty, the most important anti-aging secret is sunscreen, which should be applied every day as the final step in your skincare routine. Whether or not you follow the J-beauty approach, it’s still advisable to protect yourself from the sun all year round. In fact, while UVB rays—which cause sunburn—intensify in the summer, UVA rays are present year-round and are responsible for photoaging.
These sun rays, in fact, have a longer wavelength that can reach the Earth’s surface even when the sun isn’t visible—that is, when the weather is gray and cloudy or it’s not summer. When UVA rays reach the dermis, they trigger the production of free radicals, which damage cellular structures and weaken the skin’s supportive framework composed of collagen and elastin. The result is drier, less firm skin that also develops dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles.

2. Is Hikari also effective as a “beach” sunscreen?
A. Hikari is water-resistant and is, to all intents and purposes, a sunscreen that can also be used at the beach. Furthermore, it is sustainable for the marine environment: Hikari contains “eco-reef” filters, meaning they comply with the Hawaiian Reef Act for the preservation of the marine ecosystem and the protection of the coral reef.

3. Sunscreen causes breakouts for me—does Hikari too?
A. Hikari has a very fluid, non-comedogenic formula that doesn’t weigh down the skin. Its lightweight texture and quick absorption make it comfortable even on combination or oily skin. In the evening, sunscreen should always be removed with an effective cleansing routine (we recommend double cleansing, starting with Ofuro Cleansing Oil, which, thanks to its affinity, effectively removes all fat-soluble particles, such as sunscreen).
